The stories of Dhruva and Prahlad are well known by adults and children throughout India. Dhruva was a young, first-born prince, who was neglected by his father, the king, out of preference for another of his wives. After an insult from his stepmother pierces his heart, Dhruva resolves to attain an elevated position in the universe not even his father or grandfather could aspire to. With unwavering determination, he moves to the forest alone to pursue his goal. What he learns there changes him forever, as he transforms his wounded pride into genuine self-realization. Prahlad was a saintly boy who happened to be born as the son of a powerful demon king, Hiranyakashipu, who was harassing the universe. Though the demon king tried everything to convert the boy, Prahlad held fast to his faith in Vishnu. Frustrated at his son's stubbornness, the demon king focuses his fury upon Prahlad, who is ultimately saved by Vishnu appearing as Lord Narasingha, a lion-headed headed entity with razor sharp claws.
