Tales From The Upanishads Amar Chitra Katha, Illustrated Full-Color Comic

There are four Vedas: Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda. But in ancient literature, as in the famous code of conduct Manusmriti written by Manu, only the first three were referred to. The fourth, according to some scholars, was a later addition.

Each Veda consists of the following parts:

* Samhita - sacred hymns and prayers * Brahmana - A treatise relating to rituals, prayers and sacrificial ceremonies. This also contains stories about gods and goddesses. * Aranyaka - texts that are appendices to the Brahmanas.

The Upanishads represent the final stage of Vedic tradition, and their teachings form the basis for much of later Hindu philosophy, in particular the six major systems, the `shad-darshanas. Most of the stories of the Upanishads revolve around the concept of a single supreme being.

The pastimes selected for this volume amply illustrate the fact that the sages of ancient India were imbued with the spirit of scientific enquiry. Knowledge was not the privilege of any select group. For example, in one stories, Ravikva, a cart driver, is humbly approached by one of the great kings of this time, Janashruti with a request to impart knowledge about Brahman.
